With their 2014 debut Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead, brothers Kiah and Tristan Roache-Turner injected a refreshing dose of rollicking ingenuity into a garden variety zombie apocalypse, elevating the genre’s traditional tropes with propulsive camerawork, gleeful splatter, and an unmistakably Ozploitation gusto. The “end of days” is once again the chief conceit of their much-anticipated sophomore sci-fi/horror spectacular, only this time the threat to human existence comes from a more believable source of soul-sucking villainy: the internet. Picking up after a millennia of no doubt badass battles between demons and a secret order of demon hunters known as Nekromancers, the forces of evil have gained a substantial foothold thanks to their new-found strategy of causing demonic possession via online social-media apps. With every WiFi-connected soul on the planet at risk, a dwindling band of Nekromancers find themselves forced to put their faith in a hapless sanitation worker (Ben O’Toole) who unwittingly carries an ancestral power that may afford them the means to definitively force evil offline. Nekrotronic features an indelible performance from the ever-magnetic Monica Bellucci as the queen of the underworld, and an eclectic array of demon-busting weaponry — the most novel of which 3D prints a demon’s soul into a corporeal (and therefore explodable) form. The Roache-Turner brothers have conjured up a riotous supernatural romp that splits the difference between the likes of The Matrix and Ghostbusters, then pours on the gore. Nekrotronic will be released in select theaters and on video on demand services on August 9th.

Entertainment One (eOne), Hopscotch Features and Guerilla Films have announced that it will make its world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival’s (TIFF) infamous Midnight Madness late-night program. Starring Monica Bellucci, Ben O’Toole, Caroline Ford, Tess Haubrich, Bob Savea and David Wenham star, the film (formerly known as Nekromancer) has been described as a “mind-bending, genre-mashing, sci-fi action-packed comedy.” This should be no surprise to people who enjoyed their last film, 2014’s Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead. Finnegan (Bellucci), the world’s greatest demon-hunting Nekromancer turned bad, is the first to discover evil spirits inside the internet, taking the mythical battle between good and evil into the digital realm. Years later, down-on-his-luck sewerage-waste worker Howard North (O’Toole) and Nekromancer sisters Molly (Ford) and Torquel (Haubrich) must destroy the plague of online demons and defeat the evil Finnegan before she can devour the souls of a million human beings addicted to their phones. NEKROTRONIC was shot in Sydney, Australia, with principal production investment from Entertainment One and Screen Australia, and financed with support from Create NSW. Produced by Andrew Mason and Troy Lum for Hopscotch Features and Tristan Roache-Turner for Guerrilla Films, the film stars Monica Bellucci as Finnegan, CEO of the sinister Daemokon corporation, who is determined to feast on every human soul on the planet via a new smartphone app. Something wicked lurks in the dark depths of the internet in Nekrotronic, a cheerfully pulpy horror comedy from Australian producer-writer-director duo Kiah and Tristan Roache-Turner. The brothers earned positive critical notices with their 2014 feature debut Wyrmwood, a lo-fi splatterpunk cocktail of killer zombies and Mad Max future-shock. Their follow-up project boasts a bigger budget and more famous cast, including Monica Bellucci and David Wenham. But this bloodthirsty comic-book fantasy is let down by its infantile humor and derivative, incoherent plot. Fantastical story elements and tongue-in-cheek humour, this is a crowd-pleasing genre-mashup that only gets more insane as it builds to its blood-soaked, head-exploding finale. Ben O’Toole and Epine Bob Savea play waste disposal workers who find themselves caught up in the conflict between Finnegan and a trio of Nekromancers: Luther (David Wenham) and his daughters Molly (Caroline Ford) and Torquel (Tess Haubrich). But when O’Toole’s character discovers an unexpected connection with Finnegan, he unwittingly becomes humanity’s last and best hope for salvation.
